My mother, Mallika, who I adore, is a talented actress herself. She holds the distinction of playing the lead female role in Sri Lanka’s first outdoor movie “Rekhawa” by the incomparable Sir Lester James Pieris, in 1956. Once during my school break I visited the home of Sumithra Pieris, another well-known movie director, with my mother. Both Lester and Sumithra thought I should play the role of a schoolboy in the drama “Goluhadawatha”. That was my introduction to the world of teledramas. My father Ariya is retired now, but he managed tea plantations in the beautiful hill country of Nuwara Eliya in his active working life. I have vivid memories from my younger days of fancy Christmas parties held at the tea-estate bungalows complete with colorful Christmas trees and grand presents. Being the youngest of four, I would often be excused from blame in sibling squabbles. My sister Thrishara, also my best friend and confidant when we were growing up, lives with her husband and two young sons in Northern California. My oldest brother Chathura is a Blasting Engineer, and he lives in our hometown of Hanguranketha with his wife and family. My brother Kapila works as a Store Manager in Dubai. His wife and daughter live in Dehiwela, Sri Lanka. Close
